Church Giving — What You Know Helps
This topic is a little off-the-path for us, but in this trying time of the Coronavirus pandemic, many churches are struggling to maintain normal budgeting because the resulting economic impact has spilled over into every aspect of life as we know it. Unfortunately, church giving has not gone without impact as well.
Let’s face it. There aren’t many of us who love talking about church giving. In many churches, it’s an awkward discussion, at best. Church giving is in decline and we can point to many reasons why, including the explosive growth of secular nonprofits over the past decade. But, we must face the hard truths of church giving, and understanding how and when people give is a start.
2 Corinthians 9:7 says “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” But as an old pastor in Colorado used to say, “God loves a cheerful giver, but you should give back to God what is His, and I don’t care if you’re cheerful about it or not.”
The church doesn’t run on air, and the work of the church requires resources, not the least of which are financial. If you are a member of the church, you should certainly want the church to fulfill its purpose and grow, and that alone should compel you to give, even over and above your tithe. But, nobody wants to talk about it, much less be told they should do it.
Beyond the fact that giving is needed, and God commands us to give, it is helpful for your church to understand how and when people give. You may have a handle on the behavior of those in your congregation already, but this infographic from Leadership Network may help you to understand from a bigger perspective.
1. New Givers Repeat
Churches need consistent, predictable giving from its established family as well as new members. 55% of new givers to the church’s general fund will give a second time within 12 months.
2. Retaining New Givers
If you add up all of the new givers over a 12-month period, you can expect to retain 48% of them through month 24.
3. Year-2 Giving Is Higher
Those who continue giving (the 48%) will give 64% more during the following year (months 13-24) than they did in the previous 12 months.
4. Trackable Giving
6% of the trackable giving to your church’s general fund comes from new givers over a 12 month period.
5. New Giver Estimates
69% of your congregation’s new givers will contribute more than $200 per year to your church’s general fund.
6. The Magic Number Is $200
99% of your church’s general fund income comes from those who give $200 or more per year.
7. One Million Dollars
For every $1 million in giving to your church’s general fund, there are 396 givers (or giving units) behind that amount).
8. The Six-Percenters
6% of your church’s givers (giving units) give $10,000 or more per year to the church’s general fund.
9. Almost Half
41% of giving to your general fund comes from those givers (giving units) who give $10,000 or more per year.
Of those who give $10,000 or more annually to your church’s general fund, the average gift per household giving unit is $18,842.
11. First Year Big Givers
About 0.6% of new givers will give $10,000 or more to your church’s general fund in their first year.
12. Givers Lost
Unfortunately, the average large church is losing 10 givers (giving units) for every 7 they gain over a 12-month period. This equates to a 30% loss.
13. Difficult To Reactivate
Only 3% of givers (giving units) who have not given in the past 12 months will be reactivated as givers over the next 12 months
